Katrina Kaif at top in 2009

The rat race of number 1 position in bollywood saw Katrina Kaif running ahead of Kareena. Dipika and Priyanka were left far behind.

***** ****

The year 2009 was of Katrina Kaif, who topped the popularity list amongst not only bollywood actresses but all celebrities from India. The lady luck showered on her with great success on the box office thus leaving no doubt on the number one position. Dipika and Kareena were left far behind this year.

Voted as the sexiest lady in Bollywood, she made pair with Akshay Kumar in De Dana Dan and saved him from total wash out on Box Office. In Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani director Rajkumar Santoshi put her opposite to Ranbir Kapoor, the chocolate hero. Not so well made film did good business thanks to the craze for this cute and young pair. Probably it was the best pair of the year.

Though all is not well between John and Katrina’s boyfriend, Salman Khan, it did not affect their onscreen chemistry in New York, a film on the back ground of terrorism. Katrina Kaif was there only as a filler.

Zero size waste fame Kareena Kapoor continued to be in lime light, but box office did not favour her much. She had two hits this year - Kambakhht Ishq and 3 Idiots released close to the year end. Much hyped Kurbaan flopped though critics had penned favourable reviews for Saif and Kareena. Main aur Mrs. Khanna was another big flop of the year.

Kareena’s old mate Shahid made an interesting pair with as Priyanka Chopra in Kaminey. The film had average business. It had more publicity due to the wet and wild poses of the pair on the internet. But the other film What's Your Rashee bombed. The actress was hoping high from this film.

Bipasha Basu had an average year with fifty percent success rate. While her diwali release movie All the Best rocked the box office, thriller Aa Dekhein Zara was turned down by one and all.

Deepika Padukone was rated as most promising face for this year in the beginning. Her pair opposite Akshay Kumar in Chandni Chowk was considered to be hot, but the film failed to attract business. In Imtiyaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal she gave supper performance opposite Saif Ali Khan. The movie was a super hit. So she had a super hit and other super flop in her account.

Vidya Balan the homely face was praised for her performance in Paa. She played role of mother of Auro (Amitabh Bachchan), who suffers from Progeria. This was the solo release of her.

Lara Dutta was publicized more for her perfect bikini body than the performance. She had two releases Blue and Do Knot Disturb and both flopped. Mughda Godse, Kangana Ranaut and Asin were also some time in publicity but failed to give moments to remember.

PAA Revives ABCL but fails Offshore

CAN PAA give the same lift to ABCL, the production house of Amitabh Bachchan, as Zanjir did to Big B in the seventies?

The box office report of Paa has confirmed that the film is a hit and may become the biggest super hit for the year 2009. The film released on Friday, December 4, had a lukewarm start because of its subject - an extremely rare genetic defect that causes accelerated ageing. However, the movie picked up the next day, following encouraging reviews and word of mouth publicity. The week ends had almost 95 per cent occupancy in theatres of big cities.

Paa was made with a relatively small budget of Rs 15 crore, as a co-production of ABCL and Anil Ambani’s BIG Pictures. According to industry estimates, the film had a collection of over Rs 20 crores in the first three days itself and has raked a profit of about Rs 15 crores so far from the domestic market only. Small cities like Agra, Ambala, Baroda, Pune and Panipat normally have a dull response for movies with serious subjects. However, the collection in such cities for Paa is also reported around fifty per cent. The block buster in these towns has up to 60 per cent occupancy.

Before giving a hit, Amitabh Bachchan in his acting career gave nine flops in a row. After Zanjir his graph kept on moving only upward. Likewise his production house ABCL so far has given string of dull performances on box office with movies like Aks, Major Saab, Mrityudaata and Tere Mere Sapne.

In fact, after getting established in 1996, during the last 13 years, except for hosting the Miss World pageant at Bangalore the company has never been in highlight. It was considered to be an unsuccessful adventure of the Super Star. Now, with Paa rocking the theatres with outstanding performance of its artists and direction of R Balakrishnan, a turning around of ABCL seems to be on the cards.

If audiences do not forget Pran in Zanjir the impression of the look of Auro will not fade out from their memories for years. The character has come up to such a height only because of brilliant makeup done by Christian Kifle, Oscar winner from Hollywood.

Paa begins dull in overseas market

THE BACHCHAN family production Paa has failed to get a warm reception in overseas market. The initial box office response to Paa in the overseas market is dull. First three day collections in US, UK and Australia was just Rs 1.6 crores from 111 screen.

Beginning with a dull start, the film did pick up on Sunday, December 6, but could not be as great a success as it saw in the Indian domestic market. Per screen average earnings in US, where it was shown on 67 screens, was less than two lakh dollars, approximately Rs 93 Lakhs. The average collection per screen was $2,974.

Average per screen collection in Australia too was below 3,000 dollar. The film was at twentieth place and recorded a collection of $ 24,986. Similarly, in UK it was on the eighteenth position in its opening weekend. From 35 screens, the collection was reported to be around Rs 51 lakh.

Shahrukh Khan desires to be a porn star

BOLLYWOOD BAADSHAH Shahrukh Khan has hit the headlines with his aspiration to become a porn star. He had remarked about becoming a porn star at the launch of a book by management guru Arindam Chaudhuri.

The new book by Arindam Chaudhuri, “Discover the Diamond in You” has quoted the example of Sylvester Stallone and his journey from a porn star to becoming one of the Hollywood's icons. Japanese electronic giant Sony's founder Akio Morita had a dream of fluttering high his country's flag on US soil, whose mention is also in the book.

Shahrukh Khan clubbed both these anecdotes to amuse the audience by expressing his desire to wanted to be a porn star. "I am going to work with all the positivity and clarity to be a porn star," he said adding further that he would take his flag and put it up in America after becoming the biggest porn star of the world.

He later explained his reasons for the remark to a guffawing audience. “You see that is what happens with students like me who take all the wrong things from the best of the examples given to them.”
